Ct V&a: Quayside Units Sold Out -- 28 May 2007
The southern V & A entrance area precinct has become increasingly popular with the last five years seeing many attractive, well-designed buildings being erected. Pace of house price growth slowed further in July -- 13 Aug 2007
Based on the latest Absa House Price Index, house price growth in the middle segment of the market (see explanatory notes) was a nominal 14,5% year-onyear in July 2007 (15% in June), which caused the average price of a house to increase to about R932 100. Average nominal house price growth of 15,4% was recorded between January and July compared with the same period last year. Real year-on-year growth in house prices of 7,5% was registered in June compared with a growth rate of 7,9% in May, based on the headline consumer price index. In the first six months of 2007, real growth in house prices averaged 8,5%
year-on-year.

Equity holdings for South African home owners has quadrupled to R3,2- trillion in less than a decade, signalling the extent to which people who elect against purchasing their properties were forfeiting asset growth, Trafalgar Property Group MD Andrew Schaefer said.

SAPOA Organises -- 13 Sept 2007
Commercial property association Sapoa has formed a committee to strengthen ties with the provincial authorities."Part of our mandate from the property industry is to ensure Sapoa maintains good relations with government at all levels," says Sapoa CEO Neil Gopal. "The developer's committee is an effective way to achieve that goal at the local level. We will be dealing with issues relating to rezoning delays, developer and local authority responsibilities, power outages, infrastructure and transport."

Increase in house prices at lowest in seven years -- 13 Sept 2007
The month-on-month increase in house prices slumped last month to its lowest level in more than seven years, according to the latest Absa house price index released yesterday. Excluding the effect of inflation, house prices declined by 0.1 percent in June, although house prices remained static in real terms since March.

MPC Rate Decision -- 18 Oct 2007
Surprise as repo rate is hiked by 50 bps to 10,50% The South African Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) raised the repo rate for the third consecutive meeting, when it announced that the repo rate will be hiked by 50 basis points to 10,50% on Friday, 12 October. Commercial banks are expected to hike the prime lending rate to 14% from 13,5% previously.

Downward Trend in House Prices continues -- 18 Oct 2007
According to the latest Absa House Price Index, the average price of middle-segment housing (see explanatory notes) increased by a nominal 14,2% year-on-year to R950 000 in September 2007 (14,8% in August). In the first nine months of the year, nominal house price growth averaged 15,3% compared with the same period last year. Real year-on-year growth in house prices of 7,6% was registered in August, unchanged from July. In the first eight months of 2007, real growth in house prices averaged 8,3% year-on-year.

Interest rates and property -- 18 Oct 2007
The Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) announced a hike of 50 basis points in the repo rate to 10,5%, prompting banks to raise their prime and mortgage rates to 14%. Interest rates have been hiked by a total of 350 basis points since mid-2006
